A root canal therapy is a quick and painless procedure performed on infected teeth that can’t be fixed with a simple dental filling. It usually involves an infected root canal. The root canal is a tooth’s natural cavity that contains the pulp, blood vessels, and nerves that preserve the vitality of a tooth. If the pulp experiences an infection due to an injury or decay, root canal therapy is performed to sterilize the canal and prevent further damage. Periodontal disease, more commonly known as gum disease, also occur as a result of chronic root canal infection.
Root Canal Infection Signs and Symptoms
- A broken or cracked tooth
- Sensitivity to extreme temperatures
- Inflamed or swollen gums
- Pus drainage from the tooth
- Extreme pain when applying pressure or chewing food
Root Canal Procedure
- X-rays of the affected tooth will be taken to examine the extent of the infection and the shape of the root canals.
- Local anesthesia is injected into the surrounding area to numb the tooth.
- A rubber dam is placed to keep the area dry.
- An access opening is made into the tooth with a dental drill.
- The decayed tissue and debris are removed using dental files (small needle-like instruments).
- The canals are flushed periodically with sodium hypochlorite and saline water to disinfect them.
- Once the root canals are sterile, the tooth is sealed with gutta-percha which is an inert filling material.
- A dental crown is advised after the procedure has been completed. It improves the structural integrity of the tooth.
- In multiple sittings, a temporary filling material is placed in the cavity to prevent contamination.
