Keeping Cavities at Bay

A healthy body needs a healthy mouth. Take a look at the following points to keep in mind for a healthier, more cavity-free smile for a lifetime:

USING LUKEWARM WARM WATER WHEN BRUSHING TEETH:

To start off, you should follow a proper, three-minute brushing ritual twice daily for a cavity-free mouth. When brushing, use lukewarm water instead of hot or cold. Not only will this help reduce the pain caused by dental cavities, but it also goes a long way towards killing bacteria hiding in the gum linings and mouth cavity.

GARGLING:

Gargling is a step ahead in ensuring the bacteria present in the mouth and throat are wiped out with the swirl of the liquid. This method helps reach those parts of the mouth where the toothbrush cannot, and kill the bacteria residing in those parts. Take lukewarm water, add salt or an anti-septic fluoride mouthwash and thoroughly gargle for a good one minute. Not only will this help eradicate symptoms and signs related to cavities and tooth decay, but also leave your mouth feeling fresh and odor-free.

AVOIDING STICKY AND SUGARY SNACKS:

Not only do these foods adversely impact your waistline, but also greatly compromise your oral health. Loaded with sugar and acid, foods such as sodas and candies allow bacteria to feed on the teeth which, accompanied with acid, quicken the process of enamel erosion and make way for cavities and tooth decay.

KEEPING YOUR DISTANCE FROM CAVITY-AFFECTED PERSON:

This may come as a surprise to many, but cavities are contagious and transfer from one person to another. Thus, coming in direct contact with an affected person’s mouth, using anything orally that has already been orally used, or even breathing closely in the same air can make one prone to cavities. It is therefore important to keep your distance from a cavity-affected person, or better still, to get them checked-up and treated.

These are some easy ways in which you can keep cavities at bay and ensure optimal oral health.
