Bad Breath
This is one of the most common problems. It can be very embarrassing and 85% of the people with incessant bad breath have a dental problem. Some of the dental problems that are caused by bad breath are cavities, oral cancer, dry mouth, gum disease to name a few. It is not suggested to cover up the issue of bad breath with a mouth wash as it will only make things worse in the future. If you have chronic bad breath then it is best to visit your dentist to rule out any of these problems at the starting level.
Tooth Decay
Tooth decay is also known as cavities and it is the second only to the common cold as the most prevalent disease. Tooth decay takes place when plaque which is the sticky substance that forms on teeth combines with the sugars and starches of the food that you consume. This combination produces acids that attack tooth enamel and destroys it. It is a myth that only children are prone to cavities, anyone can have it. As you age, you can develop cavities as your tooth enamel scrapes off. The best way to prevent tooth decay is by flossing daily, brushing twice a day and paying a visit to your dentist for regular checkups. Eating healthy food and avoiding snacks and drinks that are high in sugar are also some ways to prevent decay. Your dentist can recommend further treatments that may help you to reduce the risk.
Gum (Periodontal) Disease
Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums that surrounds the teeth. It is also one of the main causes of tooth loss. Some studies have indicated that there is also a link between heart disease and periodontal disease.
Everyone is at risk for gum disease however, it usually occurs after 30 years of age. Smoking is one of the most significant risk factors apart from diabetes and dry mouth. The symptoms include painful chewing, bad breath, red, swollen, tender or bleeding gums, and sensitive teeth.
The two main stages of gum disease are gingivitis and periodontitis. Regular visits to your dentist along with brushing at least twice a day play an important role in preventing gum disease. You should visit your dentist if you have any signs of gum disease so you can get treatment to prevent further issues such as tooth loss.
Oral Cancer
Oral cancer is a serious disease that affects millions of people. The Oral Cancer Foundation evaluates that someone in the United States dies every hour from oral cancer but it is often curable if diagnosed and treated in the primary stages. It is most often seen in people over the age of 40. The biggest factors are tobacco and alcohol use including chewing tobacco. HPV which is a sexually transmitted virus also increases the risk. The symptoms of mouth cancer include sores or rough areas in the mouth. If you notice any of the symptoms or have trouble with chewing, swallowing or moving your tongue or jaw then you must see your dentist.
We often tend to ignore these signals but it is important to pay attention to them and cure them at an early stage.
